Interview with a Vampire book review

The novel “Interview with a Vampire” is a really successful Gothic literary works. It has distinctive gothic characteristics: The main character is Vampire, they kill people, eat corpses and turned others become vampire. Those elements make a frightening effect to the reader. It expresses the reflection on the dark side of the society and the dark side of human nature. This novel also shows the diversity of the vampires and the author’s emphasis on some elements makes it easier for the reader to recognize vampires.

In my opinion, the content of the book revolves around Louis’ internal contradictions and internal torture, so there are a lot of first-person descriptions of Louis in the book. This novel depicts a lot of vampires. For instance, the main character Louis, Lestat, Claudia, Armand and Madeleine. Although they are all the same type of creature, their personalities are quite different. That’s how the author shows the diversity of the vampires. The vampire Lestat turned Louis into a vampire because Lestat wanted his accompany. However, although Louis became a vampire, he still retained the human conscience and suffering in his heart. Lestat was a traditional vampire and always satisfied with the status quo. Even though Claudia has a pretty young looking, there was full of curiosity and terrible in her heart. Armand became very selfish in the face of love, which in turn led to the death of Claudia. That all shows the diversity in their personalities.

The author combines three important elements that the characters could remain easily identifiable as vampires. Firstly, Vampires could attain eternal life and never become old. For instance, Claudia will never grow up, she has a mature mind but remains a young girl’s body. Second, vampires cannot control themselves to drink blood, although Louis do not want to kill people, he finally accepted his vampire nature and killed a girl, which is later the vampire Claudia. Thirdly, Vampires will turn to ashes when exposed to the sun, just like Claudia and Madeleine.

The novel also reveals me immortality cannot make the pain gone. If we cannot stop thinking, cannot stand being alone and cannot stop to search for love, the pain will always be with us just like the vampires.
